Challenge #1: RECYCLED PAPER WITH FLOWER SEEDS

From: GO Alive

To: 6th Gymnasium Kozani

Making recycled paper with flower seeds is a nice and sustainable DIY project. You can recycle paper and turn it into sheets of paper containing flower seeds. When these sheets are placed in a garden or other space, the seeds will sprout and turn into beautiful flowers!

Materials that are needed:

  1. Old papers (e.g. newspapers, magazines, mostly white and some with colour to get the shade you want)
  2. Water
  3. Blender
  4. Oil pads
  5. Flower seeds
  6. Towel
  7. Plasticine

Instructions:

  • Collect the old papers you want to recycle. Remove any plastic coatings or metal parts and cut the paper into small pieces.
  • Put the pieces of paper in a blender and add water. The ratio you should use is about 3 parts paper to 1 part water and leave them to soften enough.
  • Blend the mixture in a blender for a minute or two, until a homogeneous mass is formed. If the mixture is too thick, you can add a little more water.
  • Place the mixture on a sieve or a piece of cloth to remove the liquid. Place a piece of parchment paper on a towel and then place the paper and spread it on top of it. When you are done with all the paper, place another piece of wax paper on top and use a rolling pin to roll the paper to make it as thin as possible.
  • Remove the top parchment paper and add the seeds and gently press them into the paper. Leave in the sun or somewhere warm for a day at least. Depending on conditions, it may take between 2 and 7 days to fully dry.
  • When the paper is completely dry, you can cut it into squares or any other shape you wish.

The sheets of paper with the flower seeds are now ready to be placed in a garden or pot. Simply place the paper in a soil and cover it lightly with a thin layer of soil. Be sure to water it well and place it in a place where it will have access to natural or artificial light.

Over time, the seeds will grow and germinate. Enjoy the blooming flowers that will grow from the recycled paper you created!

Note: Make sure the flower seeds you use are appropriate for your area and climate conditions.
