From 12th to 19th May 2024, a group of young participants from across Europe gathered in the vibrant coastal city of Alicante, Spain, for a transformative Erasmus+ Youth Exchange titled “No future without a past.” This enriching project, co-funded by the European Union, aimed to empower young people to engage critically with history, reflect on its impact on the present, and foster tolerance through shared intercultural experiences.

The Experience

Throughout the week, participants immersed themselves in a diverse program of non-formal education activities. Interactive workshops, group discussions, and creative methods were used to explore topics such as:

– Promoting critical thinking and analysis of historical events

– Raising awareness of how biases can shape interpretations of the past in social, political, and cultural contexts

– Fostering tolerance in response to extreme narratives by understanding history through different lenses

Participants had the chance to express themselves, share their cultures, and collaborate with peers from different countries. They bonded during team-building games, engaging cultural nights, and shared reflections both indoors and outdoors, including at the beach.

Testimonials from the Participants

Thanasis shared:

“In this program, I met people from many countries in Europe and beyond, giving me a new perspective on their attitude towards life. Participating in such a program may seem daunting at first, but the outcome will surely be rewarding.”

Alexandros wrote:

“The Erasmus project in Alicante was really spectacular. The topic was ‘No future without a past’ and I have learned so much through the project all these days. I also liked that we got to share things about our country and culture with people our age but from different countries. To end with, I really hope I can be part of another Erasmus project because for me it’s an out-of-this-world experience.”

Petroula reflected:

“The Erasmus+ youth exchange in Alicante, Spain was a truly memorable experience. We learned various things and engaged in serious and stimulating topics while also meeting many new people and cultures. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this project, and very appreciative of the people that organized and participated in it.”

Polina added:

“Taking part in the Erasmus+ Program ‘No future without a past’ is an experience I will never forget. The friendships we formed through working in teams with people from different countries was, for me, the best part of the whole experience. Alicante was a beautiful place and I am glad we got to explore it.”

Learning Through Reflection and Connection

Beyond exploring historical perspectives, the exchange encouraged empathy, cultural exchange, and active listening. Participants left Alicante with new friendships, deeper awareness of their shared European identity, and a desire to continue engaging in intercultural learning.
