From the 10th to the 17th of June 2024, young participants from across Europe gathered in the coastal town of Paola, Italy, to take part in the Erasmus+ training course “Green Playgrounds”. This dynamic and engaging project explored the intersection of sustainability and sports, empowering youth through non-formal education, intercultural collaboration, and physical activity. Co-funded by the European Union, the initiative aimed to inspire new ways of integrating inclusion and environmental awareness into sports practices.
Throughout the week, participants explored the role of sports in promoting environmental sustainability and social inclusion. Through energisers, team games, skill-sharing workshops, and field activities, they gained insight into:
– How sports can serve as a tool for inclusion and community building
– The connection between sustainability, physical wellbeing, and education
– The importance of creating safe, inclusive spaces for young people to thrive
The group engaged in swimming, volleyball, outdoor challenges, and creative sessions focused on designing inclusive sports programs that reflect European values. With the sea, the sun, and the green landscapes of southern Italy as a backdrop, learning happened both on and off the field.
Vangelis shared:
“It was my first project and was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I made friends from other countries and we had fun and created perfect memories together. You must try this unique Erasmus+ experience!”
Dimitris reflected:
“The training course in Paola was a constructive experience. I learned how to swim correctly and rescue people in the water. The relationship between sports and sustainability was highlighted through group activities that promoted inclusion.”
Panagiotis wrote:
“I gained so many things from my Erasmus+ experience in Paola. Despite making new friendships and exploring the south Italian side, I learned about the intersection of sports and sustainability, understanding how sustainable practices can be integrated into sports management and events.”
Loukia explained:
“After completing the ‘Sustainability and Sports’ training course in Paola, Italy, representatives of the Greek national team organized a workshop to inform their local community about the Erasmus+ program. The workshop was held in a local café in Paros and attracted ten peers interested in the Erasmus+ project. Throughout the session, they provided information about the Erasmus+ project and the Youthpass, specifically detailing their experiences and lessons learned in Paola.”
“Green Playgrounds” wasn’t just about sports it was about values. The experience taught participants to think critically about the way we play, move, and come together. With intercultural dialogue, shared meals, sea swims, and strategic teamwork, the project created a lasting impact on every person involved.
Thank you to the trainers, partners, and all participants for their energy and contributions.
