Our team carried out an activity at the 2nd EPAL of Kozani, immersing students in sustainability through practical learning.
The day began with a brief presentation about the goals of the “Green Out of the Box” program, highlighting the importance of sustainable living and environmental awareness in everyday life. The students engaged enthusiastically with the discussion, sharing their thoughts and ideas about how they perceive sustainability and the challenges we face today.

Following the presentation, the students rolled up their sleeves and took part in creating a small vegetable nursery. Using recycled materials, such as plastic bottles, old containers, and wooden boxes, they planted a variety of vegetables and herbs, learning how reusing items can contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle.
Young participants not only learned about environmental responsibility, but also felt empowered to take action in their own communities, discovering that even small changes—like growing food or upcycling—can make a real difference.

In collaboration with the 5th Air Scouts and 3rd Scouts of Kozani, the “Green Out of the Box” team headed to the scouts’ summer camp at Litochoro, Pieria.
Hosted at their campsite, the day was dedicated to environmental education through experiential learning. The event kicked off with a short talk about sustainability, focusing on why it is crucial to protect natural resources and adopt eco-friendly habits in our daily routines.
To make the experience more engaging, the scouts participated in a series of interactive games designed to strengthen their understanding of environmental concepts. From resource-saving roleplays to recycling-themed challenges, the children learned through fun and collaboration.

The highlight of the day was a tree-planting activity within the campsite grounds. Each participant contributed by planting trees, which symbolized their commitment to a greener future. It was a powerful moment that combined education, action, and community spirit.
The activity was embraced with enthusiasm, helping to cultivate a more eco-friendly mindset and practical skills in all participants.

The fourth action took place at KDAP-MEA PROTYPO, a creative center for children with special needs in Kozani. The day was designed to be fun, inclusive, and educational, with a focus on recycling and the journey of waste.

Children played sorting games to learn which materials can be recycled and which cannot. Next, the children used recycled materials to create their own mini flower pots, which they decorated and planted with small herbs and flowers. This hands-on activity gave them the chance to see how something old can be transformed into something beautiful and useful. The children also watched a visual presentation about the journey of waste—what happens when it’s thrown away vs. what happens when it’s recycled. This helped them connect the dots between their actions and the environment.

Finally, the group created posters with drawings and slogans promoting recycling and sustainability. These artworks will be displayed at the center to keep spreading the message even after the event.
This activity highlighted that environmental education should be accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The joy, curiosity, and creativity of the children made it a truly memorable day, and their artwork will remain on display at the center.

On 23rd of September 2025, the “Green out of the Box” challenge, supported by concluding in an inspiring educational event on ecology and sustainability, bringing together 185 students from five schools in the Kozani Regional Unit. Participants joined from Gymnasium of Krokos (40 students), Music School of Siatista (45 students), Onassis Public School of Kozani (50 students), 1st Gymnasium of Kozani (25 students), and Gymnasium of Xirolimni, Kozani (25 students). The event created a unique platform for young people to reflect on environmental challenges and develop creative solutions together.

The opening workshop was “ 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Green Action Pledges.” Participants created artworks and practical objects from items that would normally be thrown away. The session closed with each student writing a personal green pledge, later displayed on the collective “Green Wall” as a symbol of shared responsibility.

The second workshop, “Mission Impossible”, where two teams competed in completing environmental challenges. From inventing recycling slogans to listing sustainable actions at school, the fast-paced game fostered creativity, collaboration, and a healthy sense of competition, with victory going to the most coordinated team.

The third workshop, “The City of the Future”, encouraged students to design their vision of a sustainable city. Using large sheets and post-its, groups illustrated transportation systems, solar energy, and parks, while noting what would disappear — plastics, smog, traffic jams. Their mini-presentations highlighted the power of imagination in rethinking urban life.

The final session of the day was a debate on “Sustainable Mobility”. Two opposing groups defended contrasting views: advocates of green mobility versus skeptics. They discussed environmental benefits, social impacts, and economic challenges, practicing how to argue respectfully while seeking a balance between convenience and sustainability.

This event showed how educational activities can turn into a powerful platform for creativity, reflection, and empowerment. Thanks to the diverse input of the facilitators, participants left not only with fresh knowledge and commitments but also with the belief that real change begins with individual and collective action.
